Applications of Machine Learning

Why is that any non-technical person will immediately go, I don’t like computers when you start talking to them about technology? Beats me.
Although it could be because they have yet to realize how much technology has been incorporated in their day to day lives. And well that’s the mantle we tech loving beings have taken up. Let‘s talk about AI!
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere. It’s highly probable that you are using it in one way or the other and you don’t even know about it. One of the popular applications of AI is Machine Learning (ML), in which computers, software, and devices perform actions via cognition meaning they work like human brains! Scary, right?
Okay let’s see, Machine Learning!! Okay, hold on take a breather, it’s not the whole weird freakishly hard field of computer science that you all have made it out to be. Yeah it’s not the easiest. But it can be tackled with the usual, hard work and persistence! And it has become a part of our lives that we never even realized it was there but still used it.
Although the media often gives the impression AI will lead to robots replacing all human workers, it’s more likely current career paths, industries and even the day-to-day tasks of your job will evolve.
“Siri, call my boss”, such a simple statement you might even utter subconsciously now. But you missed the part where ML is integrated in these systems. Yes, Alexa, Sire, Google Now are some of the more popular examples of virtual personal assistants. They assist in finding information, when asked over voice.
Machine learning is an integral part of these personal assistants as they collect and refine the information based on your interactions with them. Then, that data is utilized to render results that are tailored to your preferences.
All you need to do is activate them and put forward your questions. To answer Queries, your personal assistant looks out for the information, recalls your related queries, or commands other resources to look for a solution. Also allowing you to instruct assistants to perform tasks like “Set an alarm for 6 AM next morning”. All this at the back of Machine Learning. Phenomenal, don’t you think?
This is of course just one of countless applications. Let’s talk about traffic predictions next.
We all have been using GPS navigation services. While we do that, our current locations and velocities are being saved at a central server for managing traffic. This data is then used to build a map of current traffic. While this helps in preventing the traffic and does congestion analysis, enabling the users using the service to avoid congested areas.
Then there is Facial Recognition, truly a technique that has helped in countless fields of medical, civil and now social media. How do you think Facebook instantly recognizes a picture of you with a friend and recommends that person be tagged?
Facebook checks the poses, projections in the picture, notices the unique features, and then matches them with the people in your friend list. The entire process at the backend is complicated and takes care of the precision factor but seems to be a simple application of ML at the front end.
Well of course what Machine Learning can truly achieve in the future to come is beyond us right now. This is but the pinnacle of what the years might bring. Let’s sit tight and enjoy as life improves, becoming better, easier and smoother if just a tad bit lazy with Technology.
